The Doldrums

As any disgruntled office worker can tell you, damn near any horrible task at work is better than truly having nothing to do. Multiply office boredom times about a gazillion on board a ship whose sails are drooping in the heat, without a breath of wind in sight. At least in an office, you get to go home at night! Given the heat, the boredom and a very real fear of running out of food before they ran out of ocean, hitting a patch of the doldrums probably made many a sailor wish he could make the sensible choice and simply sleep the day away until the sails filled once more.
