New South Wales

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a transportation sentence to the “thief-colony” at Botany Bay in New South Wales was essentially a one-way ticket to the edge of the world. Frankly, just getting to the colony alive via ship was a tremendous undertaking. If convicts didn’t die from exposure, typhus, gangrene or scurvy during the eight-month nightmare voyage, in the early years of the colony they also faced the very real possibility of starving to death, all while toiling under the broiling Aussie sun for their jailors. Fact: In the early decades of the settlement, there was an actual trade in “maps” that showed newly arrived convicts how to walk to China from New South Wales. Unsurprisingly, nobody made it.
