Hands up! Who knows what scurvy is? We’ll give you a hint – nary a fruit or veg. in sight for months makes for some truly revolting vitamin deficiency-based diseases. If you think Brittanic food is bad nowadays, just consider what if must have been like on a mariner vessel in the 1700’s! Ewww. With no way to keep cool, fruits and veggies rotted long before sailors could eat them, and so seamen missed out on most of the nutrients they needed to stay healthy - most particularly Vitamin C. Hello scurvy! To combat the nasties of this miserably debilitating disease - the bane of sailors everywhere for centuries - the British navy began stocking their ships with limes, which rotted less quickly and were chock-full of Vitamin C. British sailors eventually became known as “limeys” for their citrus-devouring ways, and the term is still used today (by nerds, rude Frenchmen and old people) to describe a person from Jolly Old England.
